How to Pick a Tulip

For the longest vase life, harvest when the flowers are still partly in bud, with 50%+ of their color showing on the outer petals. At Royal Oaks Farm we treat our tulips as annuals and want to encourage you to pull up the entire plant, bulb and all, during harvest. This gives you maximum stem length. To pick tulips this way, simply grasp the stem as close to the ground as possible and pull straight up. Pulling from the ground level is important because if you pull higher up, the stem could snap leaving you with a short tulip or worse, just the flower. Don't worry if the bulb comes out of the ground when you pull the tulip stem. Simply snap off the bulb and leave it lay in the tulip row. Please note that these bulbs are coming out of the ground to early in the season to produce a bloom next year and will not rebloom even if you save and replant them.

You are also always welcome to cut tulips with our provided snips the ‘old-fashioned’ way too!

Please note: As a Pennsylvania agricultural operation, we do not assume any liability for injuries or other difficulties you may have while visiting our property.
